UK Grid Reference Finder Privacy Policy
Last updated: 16 October 2026
This policy covers the UK Grid Reference Finder app for Android (previously known as UK Grid Tools). The app is developed by Surveyor.DEV Ltd (“we”, “us”).
We believe that your location belongs to you. The app is free, it doesn’t show adverts, and it contains no analytics or tracking code. You don’t need an account to use it.
The Short Version
Your location, your compass bearings, and your settings stay on your device. We do not collect, sell, or share your personal data. The only time your location leaves your phone is when the app retrieves a postcode, and even then, only anonymous coordinates are sent to the mapping service.
Information the App Uses Locally
- Location (GPS): The app requires location permissions to determine your coordinates and grid reference. Every mathematical coordinate conversion (OS Grid, MGRS, Plus Codes, Irish Grid) is processed entirely offline, on your device. We do not receive, track, or store your location history.
- Sensors (Compass & Spirit Level): The app accesses your device’s magnetometer and accelerometer to power the compass dial and tilt indicator. This sensor data is processed live on your screen and is never saved or transmitted.
- Preferences: Your settings (such as chosen coordinate formats, visible cards, and language) are saved locally on your device’s internal storage.
Third-Party Services
We do not use third-party analytics or crash reporting tools. However, to provide specific localised features, the app relies on the following external services:
- Postcode Lookup: If the Postcode card is enabled and you have an active internet connection, the app will send your current latitude and longitude to the Postcodes.io API to fetch the nearest UK postcode. No identifiable information (like an IP address tied to an account) is sent by us. You can read their privacy policy at postcodes.io.
- Native Geocoder: If the app cannot reach Postcodes.io, it falls back to your device’s built-in Android Geocoder (provided by Google Play Services) to find a location name. You can review the Google Privacy Policy for details on how Google handles these native requests.
- MapGrid & Sharing: If you choose to share your location or open it in MapGrid, the app hands your current coordinates over to your device’s sharing menu or web browser.
Children’s Privacy
Our app does not contain ads or social media links and is safe for all ages. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy occasionally to reflect new features (such as the addition of new coordinate systems or sensors). Any changes will be posted on this page with a revised date at the top.
